March 25/33
Dear Mother and Dad,
Just finished writing me out a speech for Conference in case I should happen to be called upon to give one. I have been at it all morning, and I am rather dizzy from thinking. I have seen too many of the missionaries get called on when they weren't looking for it so I thought I would start early and get myself prepared. If things turn out all right I am liable to go down to Hamburg and visit their Conference next week. They have already asked me to come down and play in their orchestra. From Hamburg, I'll go direct to Kiel where our Conference will be held the following Sunday.
Yes, it was a good thing Dad slipped his little epistle in with the last bunch of letters. The way everyone wrote it was enough to make a fellow start thinking about hitch-hiking alright. However, I'm not worried much about the banking situation in America. That is, from all that I know about the matter. It is like President Salzner says, though, things could go wrong and necessitate the removal of a lot of missionaries nach ihrem Heimatland.
It is certainly Spring today. The birds are warbling and the sun is shining like nobody's business. Last Tuesday, the first day of Spring, Brother Halliday and I called time out and walked up into the land of Denmark. They let us across the border without charging us for a visa or the like so we remained in Denmark all day and took in a bit of the scenery with a Kodak. Neither one of us could speak Danish so upon entering little restaurant we ordered up what we wanted in German and got by alright. Most of the people here on the border can speak either of the two "Spraches" anyway. Germany also called a holiday last Tuesday to celebrate spring and the taking of office by the New Reich Cabinet of Hitler's. I guess it was Hitlers because everyone dawned their Hitler uniform and paraded the streets. We had a parade her in Flensburg that lasted for about thirty minutes.
Well, I'm holding the fort down all alone again here in the Branch. My "Mit" has gone to Friedrickstadt for a few days. It seems as though he is the traveling Elder around here and I'm the Branch President. This is one Branch that I would like to be President of. When Brother Halliday is gone, it takes all of my time keeping them out of each other's hair. They are so cockeyed jealous of another's authority around here that they can't agree on anything. One of the members got sore the other day because we relieved him of his Sunday School Presidency and he came around and began to tell us what was what and we almost had to oust him. These German people are bright in some ways but they are so dumb in other aspects and respects that they are hard to handle.
What is Earl's address?? He hasn't written me so I reckon it's up to me to write him. He is about in the middle of his undertaking, is he not?? By the way, tell Jean and Joy not to put so much honey and syrup on their letters. I had a hard time getting them apart. There hasn't been much happening this week so I'll have to call this brief to a halt.
Lots of Love,
Clarence
