1922 - Grandpa Clarence and his Violin (Revised)

Grandpa Clarence loved music which apparently began at a young age. His father, Stanley L. Crandall also played the violin and his mother played the piano. His home was undoubtedly very musical.

"He was a Bass, in fact he referred to himself as a Basso-profundo---very low, very rich and mellow, an incredible voice even though he never "studied" voice.  He had a huge repertoire of sacred songs, opera arias and art songs and sea chantys.  I (Lella) have his music.  I had a friend who is a baritone (I couldn't find a bass) to record my favorites of Dad's songs and 2 CD's.   Each of the children has the set--Drucie, Rick, Russ, Tom, Clare.   As children, we often went to sleep hearing Dad sing or play the violin (he was very good) while Mother accompanied him.  There was no TV, no stereo system, just Mom and Dad making music.  Wonderful memories!!"  (Aunt Lella)

In this 1922 newspaper article (19 Dec.), Clarence, at age 11, was already performing with his violin.
