1933-08-12: Bruder und Ratgeber to Young Earl (Brother and Advisor)

Dear Lyle,

Not having heard from you for a long time I have decided to write you and see if you still exist.  Have you a sore finger or something that you can't write or are you just waiting for me to repent and write myself??  Whichever it is, is probably a good excuse at that.  My time is so taken up that it is hard to keep up this correspondence business.

Just what are you doing to keep yourself out of mischief, anyway.  In Mother's last letter I read that you were sick.  That's a heck of a condition to be in.  If you were over here in Deutchland and had to eat cheese everyday you would have a right to be sick.  But being as how you haven't anything to do but eat  watermelons and drink soda-pop, I can't see any reason for you having to park yourself in a bed.  Perhaps you just have the crug.  What??  You can ask Dad what kind of a sickness that is.

Yes, it won't be long until your school days are over with.  I hear that you are entering your first year of High school next year.  Hot dog!!  It won't be long now will it??  This summer has gone by so fast I hardly know where the time is at.  I presume you have been spending the larger part of your vacation in the  mountains this summer.  What?? Or have you been down in the Drug Store leaning on the counter all these three months?

I don't know what to write in the way of news about myself.  The mission field is just a big school, you might say.  Our daily labors are always pointed towards the same goal, that is, to bring the gospel in reach of the world that they may receive the opportunity of retaining it or refusing it.  Of course our daily experiences vary a bit in that we run up against obstacles now and then that we have to climb over.  Only day before yesterday the police interrupted our house meeting by being curious as to the  nature of our meeting.  And it seems as though every day we have to put up with being run out of someone's house.  However, it is a great life.

At present I am working with a German brother so you can imagine that my American habits have pretty well gone to dogs.  The only chance I get to speak English is when I got to a District Missionary Meeting and meet some of the American missionaries.  That's a great experience in itself.  I have arrived to the point where I can express myself better in German than in English. When I come home I'll have to call time out and brush up on my American habits etc.  as well as language.  What??  while visiting one of our friends the other day I put on some wooden shoes and started to do a clog-dance but had to quit on account of them hurting my feet.  A fellow has to get used to those things.

Well, be good Lyle and write me if you find time.

Ihr Bruder und Ratgeber,
Clarence
