1933-02-05: "Germany is on the way to an overhauling..."

Dear Mother and Dad,

I am now in Kiel and am about to catch a train back to Flensburg, but then perhaps I can get this letter started before I shove off.  I have been here a couple of days to a Missionary meeting.  Our District Conference is coming up in a short while and it has necessitated a bit of early preparation.  There are only five of us in this District which means that we will all be plenty busy at conference time.

It has only been a few minutes since Sunday School let out.  And while there, this morning, they caught me with my pants down and asked me to speak.  Having forgotten that I was a stranger in this branch, I wasn't aware of the fact that I might be called on.  However, I waded through a few thoughts in German that gave them something to think about.  I imagine they thought more over the German I used than they did of what I said.  It is still hard for me to speak German without a little preparation before hand.

It is pretty cold and damp today.  For the past week we have had a little snow and rain everyday.  We have also had a bit of sunshine mixed in with it.  In fact there was one day this week when the sun was out the entire day.  By the way, the pictures certainly looked good.  They look as if everything might be bright and sunny at home.  I had some pictures made in Flensburg the other day which I have to have to give to the saints.  They will probably be ready when I get back.  If so I'll slip one in with this letter.

Well, here I am back in Flensburg.  My companion stayed in Kiel where he will probably remain for a week.  So that means that I'll have the branch affairs all to myself to take care of. That is something that I haven't had much to do with so far.  The senior companion is always the caretaker of the "Gemeinde" unless there is a little work to do, and then is when the junior "Mit" comes in handy.  However, I don't mind the work because  the more he has to do the more progress one makes.  And I can say that my new Mit is pretty good that way because he always sees that I have lots to do.

By the way, I have become interested in Genealogy since I have been over here and I would like to know a little about our own.  (on both sides)  Has anyone taken it upon themselves to trace our genealogy back and if so, who??  Has there been work done in the Temple for our dead???  Where do our ancestors hail from and at what time did they come to Amerika??  I am asking these questions because if such hasn't been looked into I am in a position where I can kinda keep my eyes open and acquire a little information and knowledge on the subject.  If I am not mistaken our forefathers came from England which if is the case I won't be able to do much until I get ready to come home.  Perhaps you could find me some names with which to work with.

Well, this is the first week that I haven't received mail since I have been here.  Either the Boat had a wreck or else everyone is taking a lay off.  Or perhaps prosperity has reached everyone and they don't have time to write, What??  Since "Adolph Hitler" received his office of Reich Chancellor over here everyone thinks that Germany is on the way to an overhauling.  There has been quite a few deaths take place since he received his office.  You read in the papers everyday where the Communists and Hitlerites get together in street fights.

I haven't hear from Early lately but if everything has gone the way we wanted it to he is now on his way to Denver.  Here's hoping everything came out all right.  I have an idea that he will be able to pass the Board all right after taking this course in Denver.  What???

Well there is nothing new only that I am out of Shaving cream.

Love,
Clarence
