1932-11-26: "Thanksgiving in Hamburg, Germany"

Dear Mother and Dad,

I arrived from Hamburg awhile ago to find big mail waiting for me.  It is certainly a relief to be able to sit down and read a letter from home.  There has been so much work and running around to do this last week that it almost has me groggy.  The missionaries throughout the district gathered in Hamburg for a big "Thanksgiving" celebration which crowded our work for the first part of the week.

The dinner was very nice but it was nothing like what you probably ate at home.  First we were served with a soup followed with plenty of roast Goose, red cabbage, potatoes and applesauce.  Though it was my first goose, it tasted pretty good, but I certainly missed the dressing and cranberry-sauce.  We ate our dinner in a private dining room of a Hotel.  Oh yes, we had plenty of fruit salad and Ice cream for dessert.  However, before we tasted the goose, we visited one of the largest "Oleo margarine" factories in the world.  It took the entire morning to go through it.  they made 'margarine on such a large scale that it made a fellow wonder who in the world eats it all.  we were shown everything from the time the oils were extracted from the nuts until it came out s butter... In the afternoon, I and my "Mit" visited a planetarium where we saw all the stars of the universe and their positions and movements during a years time.  as much as I understood of it all, was very interesting, but the Lectures talked so far above my head that I was unable to rasp the German he used.   In the evening all the missionaries went to the opera "Carmeen".  Today we sat through a missionary meeting which lasted the entire morning and afternoon.  Our problems and etc., concerning our work and our branches are thrashed out in such meetings.  and then we always have a testimony meeting which is always interesting.  Some of the testimonies that the missionaries bear are wonderful.

As for getting some Christmas presents for the kids, I haven't run across a thing that they would like.  so I hardly think it wise to depend upon me to find something for them.  As a matter of fact, anything that you can get here, you can also get in America.   Yes I would certainly like to have a couple more pair of underwear.  The same weight that I took with me, that is, the cotton ones.

Yes, and as for me looking like a bishop, don't take that picture for what it reveals.  I do weigh about 10 lbs. more but nothing like what the picture says.

Well it is time to go to bed and I am all in, so I'll say good night until next week.  I hope you are all well and had as good a "Thanksgiving" as I.  May the Lord bless you.

Clarence
