1932-11-13: A Letter to his Brother Earl

Elmshorn, Germany
Panjestrasse 12

November 13/32

Dear Earl,

Your letter was certainly a bundle of sunshine even though it was short.  I wish you would write more of them.  You'd think that by now, letters wouldn't make much difference to a fellow, but they do.  Although "Deutchland" is getting to be more like a home to me, I still get America over the Radio which keeps me mentally in Safford.  That is, when I have time to stop and think of something besides my work.  "Es gibt immer arbeit" as they say it.

You seemed to have a lot to say about your new girlfriend.  She must be a "pip".  I can place her name but not her face.  Anyway you can give her greetings from me.  You say Mother is getting worried again?  Well don't let her get that way.  However, two Kathleens in the family would be a coincidence. By the way, never fail to tell me how my girl is behaving.  To tell you the truth, I would like to see you give all the "fems" a slip and go on a mission yourself.  Even though such a thing is an impossibility now, you still have two years to think it over.  It's a great life Peck.  But there is not use in my telling you why because a fellow doesn't or rather can't realize it until he has been into the work for a while.  But take it from me, it's worth your time.  How about it, are you still planning on going to Denver this winter?

With me, lately, it has been the same grind everyday, over and over.  Mostly studying, struggling with this infernal language and preaching on the side.  I have started a very small choir in the Glückstadt branch which has also been keeping me busy.  I'm afraid it isn't going to amount to much, but I'm still working with it.  I'd swear on a stack of Bibles that the whole bunch couldn't carry a tune in a gunny-sack.  Tomorrow I and my companion are going into Hamburg to see our District President off towards home.  First he is taking a trip throughout Europe.  Here's hoping I can put away a few pfennigs every month so that I can tour the continent also.  You say you went to Tucson for homecoming.  How are the members of the "House of Rim'em" stacking up?  Are they all going back to school?  I presume it sort o' made you want to go back.  What?

Well I'm running out of blah again.  This country has got me at the stage where I can't think straight enough to write anything.  I did go to another Opera a couple of weeks ago:  "The Meister Singers von Nürenberg".  It was considered as being among the best.  Five hours long, it was.  (Getting so I can't put the verb in the right place.  Have you noticed it?)  At these operas, one becomes acquainted with the highest class music and singing there is.  Well I'll throw in some snap-shots and quit.  Say, how about sending me some Kodak pictures from home.

Love,
Clarence
