Dear Mother and Dad,
Not having written for a couple of weeks, I guess it's time to lay aside the work and do a little corresponding. I have just returned from Hamburg where I have been for the past week. Our Fall Conference necessitated my coming in a bit early to help with the program etc. To say the least, our conference was a great success. It made me feel right at home, in spite of the fact that the missionaries and President Salzner were the speakers. I sat on needles and pins for fear I was going to be called on to speak, but it seems as though the Lord is going to give me another chance. You know, I have to memorize about half of my speeches yet, on account of this infernal "sprache". Our meeting house was very pretty and elaborate. We obtained a place in the middle of Hamburg which would seat seven hundred, and it was full at all meetings. Saints came from all over the country.
Saturday night, we held our Wagner program which was also a success. The entire evening was dedicated to Wagner and his music. I was congratulated upon the solo that I gave, by quite a few. The German people are all music lovers so it makes me feel pretty good when they come and shake my lunch hook. You might say that they are far ahead of America in music appreciation.
Monday, President Salzner, from Basel, held us in a missionary meeting from ten o'clock in the morning until four-thirty in the afternoon without even so much as letting us out of our seats. But after the meeting all the missionaries, with President and his wife, had a get together at a big dinner, somewhat of a banquet you might say.
In the evening, we gave a dance for all the saints which was also a big success. "Aber", the missionaries weren't allowed to dance. All we could do was look on and entertain them now and then.
Yesterday, the missionaries were going to get together at a game of Football but it rained so we called it off and had a group picture taken instead. As a matter of fact, it has rained everyday this week. Some country, Vot? It rained so much that we couldn't take in any sights and we were all to broke to go to an opera, so we returned to our branches.
No, it doesn't seem to me like it has been long since I left home. Time is flying right by. I received a letter from Delmar Layton and also one from Grant yesterday and they also think that time flies so I guess it does. When a guy goes o a mission, he finds out that life isn't so long after all. Delmar and Grant both have been transferred to new districts lately. Delmar's time is almost up and he says that he'll come around and see me before he leaves.
This might be a little news for Dad. In reading a German paper, I find that the National Socialists are quite against the International Free Mason Rotary Club over here. Whether it is the same club that is in America or not, I don't know. Anyway they claim that the Rotary Club has a lot to do in running the government over her because so many of Germany's big leaders belong to the club.
Yes, I received the shirts o.k. No duty was charged. By the way, your cake etc. has all gone "vor bei". However, my mit had a birthday last week so we are still eating birthday cake.
Well, I suppose I can quit now. I have written my page. Everything is o.k. Oh yes, I heard form Waldo Huber who is now in Cologne in the missionary school. He was one of my pals in the Coffee Shop last year.
Hoping you are all well and receiving the same blessings that I am.
Clarence
