Stanley L. Crandall registered during the first of three World War I drafts on the 5th of June 1917. He was described as medium height, stout build, with gray eyes, and light colored hair. He was 26 years old at the time, married with 3 children, and worked at the "Best Drug Store" in Safford.
On May 18, 1917, the Selective Service Act was passed authorizing President Wilson to increase temporarily the military establishment of the United States. This lasted until July of 1919. During those two years, there were three separate draft registrations. (http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/ww1/draft-registration/)
World War I was a military conflict centered in Europe that began in the summer of 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by a Yugoslav nationalist. The fighting ended in late 1918. This conflict involved all of the world's great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers. Any able-bodied man between the ages of 21-31 was required to register or face a penalty of imprisonment in jail. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I)
